A day in Arkansas
I have driven through Arkansas at least 7 times in the last three years, but never stopped to explore it. This fall, while driving to Houston from Toronto, I finally decided to stop in Arkansas. I love mountains and heights, and hence, it only made sense to start at the highest peak in Arkansas, which is Mount Magazine.
Luckily Mother Nature was on our side (my husband and I), and we got excellent weather. We took Route 309- Mount Magazine Scenic Byway into Mount Magazine State Park. Winding roads surrounded by lush green trees and breathtaking views of the valley take you into the state park.
We stopped at the visitor center to pick up the park map. We were greeted by deer and many different types of butterflies right outside the visitor center. The staff inside was very friendly and they knew the area very well. Since we were only going to be spending the day in Arkansas, they guided us on how to make the most of our very short time there.
After picking up the map, the first thing to do was to hike up to the highest point of Mount Magazine. This peak is called “Signal Hill”, which is also the highest point in the state of Arkansas, with elevation being 2753 feet above mean sea level. Due to time constraint, we took the shortest hike to the peak. We parked our car by the Cameron Bluff camping area. The hike is short but the path is uneven. However, for those who may not be able to walk very well, or require support, this hike is still doable.
Once we completed the hike, we decided to drive through the park. Along the way, we stopped at all scenic vistas to take in the magnificent views.

After spending about half a day at Mount Magazine, we headed towards Mena, AR. We took AR-80 W ► HWY 250 ► US 71 S. This goes through Ouachita National Forest. More windy roads surrounded by forests, this was an absolutely beautiful drive. I had my car windows rolled down and was loving the fresh cool breeze on my face. By the way, one of my favorite feelings is the feel of wind in my face! The drive was even more amazing because we were driving in fall! And we know what that means! Yes, the leaves were changing colors and we got to see some amazing red and yellow and orange along the way. I never knew Arkansas changed colors, so this was a truly pleasant surprise.
Although very short, we had a great time and it was a day spent well! I am from Texas and here we do not see much color change. But AR is a very close drive. You can easily spend a week enjoying nature at its best or if you are short on time, it is perfect for a quick weekend getaway trip. Highly recommend going there this November before the colors are gone!
